WASHINGTON, Indiana — The Washington community is mourning the loss of 28-year-old Israel Waggoner, who died in a side-by-side rollover crash late Wednesday night in Daviess County.
According to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders were dispatched shortly after 10:37 p.m. to County Road 450 South, west of County Road 50 West, following reports of a serious rollover involving a utility terrain vehicle (UTV). Initial calls indicated that an individual was trapped beneath the overturned vehicle.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered a white 2016 Polaris side-by-side that had overturned and come to rest off the south side of the roadway. Investigators determined that Miranda Knepp, 31, of Washington, was operating the vehicle, while Waggoner was riding in the front passenger seat.
Authorities said Knepp told investigators she swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle, causing her to lose control of the Polaris. The vehicle subsequently overturned onto its passenger side and slid several yards before coming to a stop.
Investigators reported that neither occupant was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
Waggoner sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His death has left family members, friends, and community members grieving the sudden loss of a young man remembered by loved ones for the impact he made on those around him.
As news of the tragedy spread throughout Daviess County, many residents shared condolences and messages of support for Waggoner’s family. Friends and loved ones have begun reflecting on his life and the memories they shared with him.
Following the crash, Knepp submitted to chemical testing. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the test result indicated a blood alcohol concentration of 0.12 percent.
After completing their preliminary investigation, authorities arrested Knepp and lodged her in the Daviess County Security Center on a charge of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Causing Death.
Officials emphasized that the charge is an allegation, and any determination of guilt will be made through the court system.
The incident has also renewed discussions about the importance of seat belt use in side-by-side utility vehicles. Safety experts note that rollovers remain one of the most significant hazards associated with UTVs, and properly worn restraints can play a critical role in reducing the risk of serious injury or death.
The roadway remained closed for a period while law enforcement officers, crash reconstruction personnel, and emergency responders processed the scene and collected evidence.
The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash and has indicated that additional information may be released as the case progresses.
