A police investigation is underway after the body of a man was discovered in the landing gear compartment of a passenger aircraft that arrived at London Gatwick Airport from Morocco.
According to authorities, the discovery was made on Tuesday, June 16, when ground personnel inspecting an Airbus A320 operated by Air Arabia Maroc found the body in the aircraft’s undercarriage area shortly after its arrival from Tangier-Ibn Battouta Airport.
Emergency services and police officers were called to the scene after airport staff reported the incident. The area surrounding the aircraft was secured while investigators and forensic specialists began examining the circumstances surrounding the death.
Officials believe the deceased may have been a stowaway who attempted to travel hidden within the aircraft’s landing gear compartment. Such journeys are extremely dangerous due to freezing temperatures, lack of oxygen, and the mechanical hazards associated with aircraft operations.
Sussex Police confirmed that an investigation has been opened and that a report will be prepared for the coroner. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased, and no details regarding nationality or age have been made public.
The incident also resulted in temporary operational delays as the aircraft underwent examination by specialist teams before being cleared for further service.
Investigators are now working to determine how the individual gained access to the aircraft and the events leading up to the fatal incident. Authorities are coordinating with aviation officials and relevant agencies as inquiries continue.
Further information is expected to be released once formal identification procedures have been completed and investigators establish the full circumstances surrounding the death.
