JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI — The Millsaps College community is mourning the loss of Dr. Hugh Parker, a distinguished educator, former dean of the Else School of Management, and longtime professor of accounting whose leadership and dedication helped shape the institution for decades.
Dr. Parker joined Millsaps College in 1987 as a professor of accounting and quickly became a respected member of the faculty. In 1993, he was appointed the second dean of the Else School of Management, serving in that role until 1998. During his tenure, he played a significant role in enhancing the school’s academic reputation and expanding opportunities for students pursuing careers in business and accounting.
Among his most notable achievements was his leadership in establishing the school’s Master of Accountancy program, an initiative that continues to be a cornerstone of the Else School’s academic offerings. His commitment to excellence helped strengthen the institution’s standing and created lasting opportunities for future generations of students.
Colleagues, alumni, and former students remember Dr. Parker as an exceptional educator whose expertise was matched by his genuine care for others. As both a Certified Public Accountant and a scholar, he possessed a remarkable ability to explain complex accounting, finance, and statistical concepts in ways that were accessible and engaging. His dedication to student success earned him the admiration and respect of countless individuals throughout his career.
In addition to his classroom contributions, Dr. Parker played an important role in recruiting talented faculty members whose work helped further the growth and reputation of the Else School of Management. Dr. Parker is survived by his wife, Cynthia, along with many friends, colleagues, former students, and loved ones who will continue to honor his memory. His legacy of leadership, mentorship, and educational excellence will endure through the countless individuals he inspired and the institution he helped strengthen.
